Black Friday & Cyber Monday Scams: What to Watch For and How to Stay Safe

The holiday shopping season is here, and so are the scammers. Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring incredible deals, but they also bring a surge in fraud targeting eager shoppers. At TopLine Financial Credit Union, we want to help you stay safe, confident, and protected as you hunt for those holiday bargains.

Here are the most common seasonal scams—and how to avoid them.

1. Fake Online Stores

Scammers create convincing (but fraudulent) retail websites designed to steal your payment information—or your money. These sites often mimic real brands or offer prices that seem too good to be true.

How to Avoid It:

  • Verify the URL carefully—look for misspellings or odd domain extensions.
  • Search for customer reviews outside the retailer’s website.
  • Check for contact information: real stores will list a physical address and a working customer service number.
  • Pay with a credit card when possible for added fraud protection.
2. Social Media "Deal" Scams

Fraudsters target shoppers through ads or posts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms. These scams often promote must-have electronics, discounted luxury goods, or hard-to-find items.

How to Avoid It:

  • Be cautious with ads from unfamiliar sellers.
  • Avoid purchasing directly via social media DMs or unverified links.
  • Check the seller’s profile: newly created accounts or low engagement are red flags.
  • Use trusted payment platforms—never pay with wire transfers, gift cards, or crypto.

 

3. Phising Emails & Texts

Scammers send messages impersonating retailers, shipping companies, or even payment services claiming an issue with your order. Their goal: get you to click harmful links or provide personal information.

Common Messages Include:

  • “Your package is delayed—click here to confirm.”
  • “We noticed suspicious activity on your account.”
  • “You won a Black Friday reward!”

How to Avoid it:

  • Don’t click links in unsolicited emails or texts.
  • Go directly to the retailer’s official website or app to verify order status.
  • Check for spelling errors, odd formatting, or generic greetings (“Dear Customer”).

 

4. “Too Good to Be True” Tech Deals

High-demand electronics—gaming consoles, tablets, headphones—are prime targets. Fake sellers may take your payment and never deliver, or ship counterfeit items..

How to Avoid It:

  • Compare the price to major retailers; extreme discounts are suspicious.
  • Stick to well-known stores or authorized resellers.
  • Read return policies carefully—scammers often avoid providing one.

 

5. Gift Card Scams

Scam websites or pop-up vendors offer discounted gift cards that are invalid, used, or stolen. In other cases, scammers impersonate employers or relatives asking for gift card purchases.

How to Avoid it: 

  • Buy gift cards from trusted sources only—like the brand’s official website or an established retailer.
  • Never share gift card numbers or PINs over email, text, or phone.
  • Treat gift card requests as suspicious, even if they appear to come from someone you know.

 

6. Fake Shipping and Delivery Notifications

During the busy season, scammers know shoppers are expecting multiple packages. Fake notifications from USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Amazon are common.

How to Avoid it: 

  • Track packages only through official carrier apps or websites.
  • Don’t enter personal information into a link from a text or email about a delivery issue.
  • Look out for tracking numbers that don’t match your orders.

 

7. Malicious QR Codes

QR codes are increasingly used in holiday displays and promotional flyers—but scammers are placing fake codes in public places, online ads, or emails.

How to Avoid it: 

  • Inspect physical QR codes for signs of tampering.
  • Don’t scan QR codes from unknown sources or unsolicited messages.
  • After scanning, check the URL carefully before entering any information.
