September is National Insurance Month

Insurance can be a confusing topic for many, and TopLine Insurance Agents Phil Derksen and Jeff Seifert are here to help! We’ve asked them some of your most commonly asked questions to help you become an insurance expert.
Q. Does my auto insurance pay if someone else is driving my car?
Phil & Jeff: This may be a question for Claims, but insurance always follows the owner of the vehicle first and then goes to the driver of the vehicle second. So, if you had insurance coverage on your car, more than likely, your insurance would be paying for any damages.
Q. What is the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?
Phil & Jeff: Comprehensive is for “Act of God” claims. For example, hail, wind, or water damage, animal hits, and also vandalism or theft. Collision covers everything else, such as colliding with another vehicle or a stationary object (like a pole or garage). Collision is the most common coverage used on a vehicle. You must also have both of these coverages for an auto loan.
Q. What does a personal umbrella policy cover?
Phil & Jeff: A personal umbrella policy covers additional liability coverage up to the policy maximum amount shown, usually $1 Million. This umbrella policy goes on top of the current auto or home insurance policy to cover the insured in case they were sued for anything that happened either by themselves behind the wheel or on their property.
Q. How often should you review your car insurance to look for a lower rate?
Phil & Jeff: Every 2-3 years is a good time to review, especially if you know that a ticket or accident is going to be removed from your driving history because it is over 5 years old.
Q. Do you offer any bundling discounts if I move both auto and home policies?
Phil & Jeff: Yes, we for sure offer bundling discounts! The amount of the discount varies from carrier to carrier, but you are looking at saving anywhere from 15-30% by having them all with one insurance carrier.
Q. Why should I buy life insurance?
Phil & Jeff: This is personal to everyone, but the most common reasons would be, in the event of a death, to pay for funeral expenses and pay off any other debts that you might have, such as a mortgage, credit cards or loans. It also helps your loved ones be able to grieve and not be worried about finances.
