The hustle and bustle of the Holiday season has officially arrived and it’s easy to get caught up in the joy and cheer of it all. Unfortunately, scammers can see this as an opportunity to target unsuspecting victims. Check out some tips below to make sure your holidays are full of family, friends and food – not fraud.
Protect Your Devices and Accounts
Update Software
Software updates protect your devices against threats – but only if you install them. Update software on all devices you use for online shopping.
Use Strong Passwords
Make sure your passwords are strong. Use at least 16 characters, and they should be unique for each account.
Use Multifactor Authentication
Multifactor authentication (MFA) is a second step to prove your identity when logging in to help keep your accounts even safer. Examples of MFA are using your finger print or face scan or entering a code sent to you.
Recognize Scam and Phishing Attempts
Beware of Phishing Messages
Cyber criminals may send messages designed to look like they’re from retailers that have malicious links or ask you for personal or financial information
Don’t Click Links for Download Attachments
Don’t click any links or download attachments in messages you aren’t expecting. If you’re unsure if a message is legitimate, don’t call a number from the message. Instead, look up the company’s website and contact info.
Be Wary of Requests for Info
Legitimate businesses won’t ask for sensitive info via text or email. Be wary of messages asking you to verify your delivery address or confirm your purchase or account.
Shop Confidently
Check for Encryption
Look at your browser to make sure the website address begins with “https” instead of “http” to make sure the website is secure if you’re shopping.
Choose Reputable Vendors
Always verify a business before entering any information. Malicious websites may appear very professional. You can always search for a business on the Better Business Bureau.
Consider Using Credit, Not Debit
Debit cards may not have the same level of protection against fraudulent charges that credit cards do. Unauthorized purchases could leave you with insufficient funds to pay other bills.
